Our Story

The Brazilian Ethnic School of SA was established in 2013, followed by a local deficiency of a school that taught Portuguese to Brazilians in Adelaide. Andréa Hughes the school Principal- founder, was already teaching Brazilian   Portuguese to a group of adults when she started observing that her 7-year-old daughter was avoiding using the language due to the obliviousness of the vocabulary in her mother tongue. Therefore, the school had its first formal opening on October 24, 2013. The school started with one class of different levels and ages, located at Burnside Primary School.

Our Mission

  • Offer Portuguese as a heritage language to Brazilian children

• Stimulate students’ creativity in general

• Prepare students to understand the context they are inserted in

• Teach Brazilian popular games in Portuguese

• Allow communication, even when they mix Portuguese and English

• Foster the importance of commemorative dates that are important to the history of Brazil

• Promote bilingualism and a sense of identity and belonging.

ANDREA

ANDERSON

I’m Andréa and I am a linguist, and specialist teacher of Portuguese, English and Spanish at the University of MT (Bachelor of Education and Post-Grad in TESOL by UNEMAT). I worked in Brazil for 15 years at the same university and in free courses as Wizard and CNA, as a teacher and coordinator before coming to Adelaide, Australia in 2010.

I currently work as a specialist EAL teacher at the Norwood International High School.

The Brazilian School was the way I found to preserve the Brazilian language and culture in my family’s lives, mainly for my daughter, who was 9 years old at the time of the school foundation. I am very proud of this project that has become a reality and I thank all those involved, whether as a work team, committees, parents, students and all those who have already passed through here.

My special thanks go to my husband and daughter who have always believed in my potential and resilience in implanting this “community of learners” that we have become.

SAMARA

I am from Sao Paulo and arrived in Melbourne in 2011. I got to know the Brazilian school in 2015 when I moved to Adelaide and my Australian husband was looking to learn Portuguese.

In 2016 I was invited to teach primary school children at BESSA. My first class had students from 6 to 15 years old, and our lessons involved cooking, singing, dancing, eating, writing and speaking Portuguese.

My daughter was born in 2017, and she started coming to the Brazilian playgroup when she was 6 months old. It was a great way to connect with Brazilian mums and share the challenges of raising a child away from family in Australia.

The Brazilian school is a small piece of Brazil in Adelaide and I love to connect with my people and celebrate Festa Junina, Carnaval and Christmas with our community.

The BESSA has been a valuable personal and professional network for me. I met most of my friends here, and it also helped me develop the confidence to become a primary teacher in Australian schools.

Thanks to my new language skills, I can now travel and communicate with ease. It's been a life-changing experience!

John
